Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Common, adaptable, wide-ranging kingfisher found both near and away from water: inhabits mangroves, wetlands, lakes, field edges, clearings, and urban parks. Plumage varies greatly across its range; most subspecies blue-green above with white belly and collar, some have white heads and orange-suffused underparts. Note dark bill with pinkish patch on lower mandible. Gives a wide range of calls, including loud cackling rattles and strident squeaking.
