Large, long-necked grebe. Black-and-white plumage similar to Western Grebe; look for whiter face (especially white above eye) and bright yellow-orange bill. Also note single reedy creeeee call (unlike Western's doubled call). Some birds appear to be intermediate and should be left unidentified. Breeds in marshes, where it builds a floating nest of vegetation. Dives underwater for fish. In winter, can mix in large flocks with Western Grebe on saltwater.
