Identification

Beautiful silvery shrike with a black mask and white wing patches. Nominate can be similar to smaller Northern Shrike, but look out for gray rump, slender pale eyebrow, and more extensive mask. Tibetan “Giant” subspecies is massive, with dark gray upperparts and no eyebrow. Nominate favors open areas with scattered or scrubby vegetation, frequenting agricultural fields in the winter; often on tall and exposed perches. Tibetan “Giant” inhabits stunted rhododendron above timberline. Both subspecies often uses tall and exposed perches.
