A small woodpecker with black-and-white spots throughout the body with a black mask framed by two white lines. Males have a red hindcrown, while females have a dark hindcrown. Mostly found in open savanna woodland.

Escapee: Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.
