Large, stocky sparrow. Uniform matte brown, with rich cinnamon tones on face and orange undertail. Forages primarily for seeds by running and hopping on the ground. Favors chaparral and other tangled shrubby, dry habitats. At home in neighborhoods of lowland California towns. Visits feeders. Separated from similar Canyon Towhee by range.
