Brilliantly colored hummingbird with restricted range in the U.S. through central Mexico. Can appear dark at a distance, but in the right light, look for beautiful iridescent blues and greens on male's body and bright red base of bill. Females are less colorful than males, dusky grayish below with prominent white stripe behind the eye. Prefers scrubby riparian woodland and canyons. Often visits hummingbird feeders.
