Chubby, smooth-plumaged bird with white and yellow markings on wings and a loose crest. Body and back gray-brown with a lighter underbelly. Face and undertail coverts are a rich rufous color. Often found in flocks. Prefers fruiting trees like crabapple and mountain ash in winter; sometimes moves south of its normal wintering range depending on fruit crops. Breeds in open coniferous forests. Listen for their buzzing trills, often given while flying overhead.
