Plump shorebird of rocky coastline in winter, found from southeast Alaska to Baja California. Dark brown or blackish overall with white belly and orange legs. Feeds on aquatic invertebrates by walking along large rocks and jetties where the Pacific meets land. Sometimes mixed with other shorebirds, especially Surfbird. Bold black-and-white pattern is striking in flight. Lacks rufous and red tones of Ruddy Turnstone. Nests on the ground in grassier areas of coastal northern Alaska.
