Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Unmistakable; combination of black-and-blue wings, inky black cap, orange underparts, and white neck and breast unique. Heavy scarlet bill imparts a top-heavy look. Reveals bright white wing patches in flight. Inhabits a variety of wet habitats, including mangroves, lakes, and marshes. Shier, less frequently seen around human habitation than White-throated Kingfisher. Gives a ringing rattle when breeding, a short “ki ki” year-round.
