Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A highly distinctive medium-sized raptor found in a wide range of forests. The distinctive crest may be held vertically or at an angle when the bird is perched, but crest tends to be hidden during flight. The black back, head, underwings, and tail contrast strongly with a thick white breast band and rusty-edged white stripes on the belly. In flight, note the upperwings with large white patches, producing a checkerboard appearance.
