Small raptor with a long crest and a black body that contrasts with white and reddish barred underparts. Breeds in tropical and subtropical forests across NE India, southern China and Southeast Asia. Although sedentary in parts of its range, northern populations migrate south in winter. In flight, note broad, round wings with conspicuous white patches above and contrasting blackish inner feathers and whitish outer feathers below. Typical flight involves languid flapping interspersed with short glides. Often seen singly or in small groups, but also in larger groups during migration.
