Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Small seabird, generally dark brown above and white below, with smudgy face, neck, and flanks. Most similar to Manx Shearwater but ranges do not usually overlap. Found in warmer ocean waters, often close to land. Distinguished from other shearwaters, especially Pink-footed, by small size and quick wingbeats; overall messy appearance also noteworthy. Found singly or in small flocks, sometimes with other shearwaters.
