Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Small seabird but large for a storm-petrel; overall dark blackish-brown with white rump patch that wraps around the side and onto the undertail. Similar to Wilson's and Leach's Storm-Petrels, but note squared-off tail with a very shallow notch, comparatively weak upperwing bar, long wings, and low flight with smooth turns (less jolting than Leach's and less fluttery than Wilson's). Found far offshore in deep warm water, but it is never common.
