Identification

Graceful raptor of open spaces, often seen gathering in flocks during migration. Adult male dark gray with rufous undertail, dark “teardrops” markings below the eye, and starkly contrasting white underwings. Female and juvenile have the same general color scheme, with darker upperparts and streaked white belly, but females are slate-gray above, juveniles brown. Red-footed Falcon (potential vagrant) similar, but females have orange head, males all-dark underwings, and juveniles paler brown overall.
