Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Darker gray than other tern species. Black cap is set off by crisp white forehead. Bill and legs are black. Nonbreeding birds develop white forehead. Juveniles are washed with beautiful rich cinnamon tones for a brief period of time in late summer. Limited range in US; breeds near the coast in Alaska, winters in Asia. Soft trilled calls are very different from the harsh and grating calls of other terns.
