Pale medium-sized gull, smaller than Glaucous and Herring Gulls. Adults have pale gray backs, slightly darker than Glaucous but paler than Herring. Wingtips variable, ranging from very pale, with some grayish markings, to black with white spots; occasionally wingtips all white like Glaucous. Young birds range from almost pure white to medium brown; average darker than Glaucous. Also note mostly dark bill of young birds unlike Glaucous. Some individuals extremely similar to Herring Gull with an endless array of intermediate birds. Breeds in the Arctic; winters farther south in a variety of habitats, rarely far from a large body of water. Often mixes with flocks of other large gulls.
