Very distinctive shrike with a red crown, red neck, and black mask. Stocky and big-headed. Most forms have prominent white wing patches, except for subspecies from western Mediterranean islands. Juveniles pale gray and scaly. Found in open areas with scattered bushes and trees, especially old orchards, where they sit on prominent perches. Winters in tropical Africa.
