Heavy-set shorebird with long, thick reddish bill, black and white plumage, and thick pale-pink feet and legs. A regular vagrant to Australia from New Zealand. Told from Pied Oystercatcher by smaller size, longer and thinner bill, shorter legs, and more extensive white up the back and on the wings. Usually coastal, but also on wetter pastures.
