May 2020 eBirder of the Month, Melissa Manzanero

Please join us in congratulating Melissa Manzanero of Belize, winner of the May 2020 eBird Challenge, sponsored by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics. Melissa’s name was drawn randomly from the 12,523 eBirders who submitted at least 3 eligible checklists on Global Big Day, May 9th. Melissa will receive a new ZEISS Conquest HD 8×42 binocular for her eBirding efforts. Here’s Melissa’s birding story:

I would like to thank eBird and everyone involved to be awarded the eBirder of the Month for May Challenge on Global Big Day. I am a beginner birder and with my valuable prize, I will continue contributing towards Citizen Science through birding.

I am a new eBirder and with the wonderful binoculars from Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, it will tremendously help me to identify more birds. As I was introduced to birding, I have managed to learn a few bird species with the help from the eBird platform and Merlin Bird ID App. These tools have helped me enormously to identify bird species that I have never encountered before.

Nevertheless, I am always in awe when I manage to see beautiful birds and raptors, especially those sighted from my backyard. During Global Big Day, I was excited to have seen an extremely rare bird, the Orange Breasted Falcon within the center of an urban area.  Sightings like these are what motivate me to continue birding.

I have learnt the true value of my eBird checklists, which contributes to conservation efforts. Therefore, I encourage everyone that uses the eBird app to continue spreading the word.  Be influential through your words and actions and keep on birding.

Cheers from Belize!
