Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A large yellowish-green bee-eater with a distinctive blue rump and tail, and a chestnut throat. Note the long central tail feathers on adults. Juveniles are much duller than adults with less contrasting blues and lack the long central tail feathers. Similar to Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, but the Blue-tailed Bee-eater lacks the pale forehead and cheek seen on Blue-cheeked, and is much bluer overall. Shows seasonal movements; inhabits open countryside, farmlands, coastal fields and estuaries. Calls include liquid rattles and trills.
