Observations

  1. Number observed: 1

Comments: The only goose I saw flew away from the slough northward at 11:02.

  2. waterfowl sp.

    Number observed: 5

Comments: Using my binoculars I saw at 10:43 a group of about 5 waterfowl diving close to shore near the channel entrance. 2 or 3 would be down, then 2 or 3 would be up.

  3. hummingbird sp.

    Number observed: 2

Comments: 1 hummingbird rising high popping straight up from the bushes between me and the slough at 10:17; another at 10:40. It could have been the same one.

  4. Number observed: 16

Comments: I identified these with binoculars (mine, not theirs). They were floating in the slough; they floated with the current deeper into the slough before about half of them swam back toward the black-headed, frill-topped "ducks" who were fishing near the shore close to the channel entrance.

  5. gull sp.

    Number observed: 1

Comments: An ordinary seagull--the default kind for coastal California: flying over slough at 10:41.

  6. Number observed: 6

Comments: The 4 were sitting on a branch or log in the slough at 10:11 a.m. 1 flew west at 10:16; another flew west at 10:20; the 3rd swam east at 10:22. At 10:30 there were 2 cormorants sitting on the branch. At 10:42 there was 1 on the branch. There was 1 remaining on the branch when I left at 11:02. Before 10:37 2 flying cormorants: 1 flying high westward; 1 flying low northeastward.

  7. Number observed: 2

Comments: There were two huddled separately on a slough island at 10:11. I identified them as I peered through binoculars. At 10:32 1 heron was walking around on the island.

  8. hawk sp.

    Number observed: 7

Comments: At 10:22 2 hawks making eastward circlings above the eucalyptus grove south of the slough. They followed or arced each other higher and higher until out of sight by 10:26. At 10:43 one smaller "hawk" cruising eastward, rising, turning counterclockwise. Another hawk at 10:49. Another over Coal Oil Point at 10:51. 2 hawks over slough at 10:52 and remaining until at least 10:55.

  9. crow/raven sp.

    Number observed: 1

Comments: 1 common crow--the usual kind, whatever that is--cawing from behind my left shoulder, 10:44.

  10. swallow sp.

    Number observed: 3

Comments: They fly westward at 10:53.

  11. sparrow sp.

    Number observed: 15

Comments: About 15 "sparrows" flying in a mass dash high over the slough westward after 10:55.
