Slender, angular sulid; long, thin wings and wedge-shaped tail evident when preening. Gray, cone-shaped bill, thick at the base and tapering to a point. Blue-gray gular skin, appearing more blue in good light. Narrow pale band encircling bill/gular area. Crown, face, and neck light brownish, with white feather bases, giving stippled effect. Upperparts dark brown, but with white patches on nape and lower back; mantle feathers with narrow pale fringes and tips. Upperwings dark brown, almost black on primaries; underwing dark, but with white patch in axillaries. Dark brown rump; grayish uppertail coverts. Tail worn and generally grayish, but with whitish feather bases and shafts. Underparts white. Feet powdery blue-gray, appearing more blue in direct sunlight.
