Arrived on 9am ferry, birded the entire west end via road, finally not a bad time out there since it was dead calm, as opposed to the usual roaring wind. Didn't check downtown until almost dark, which turned out to be unfortunate since that is where the Varied Thrush was - who knows what else might have been around on this calm day!

Details: **Very rare. I looked up from thicket birding and saw a bird teed up over the road about 40 feet away - a silhouette. I put binoculars on it and immediately knew: Varied Thrush. The large bill, orange eyeline, pale orange below, and very light slate gray breastband were the marks I saw to identify it. As I lowered my binoculars and swung my camera up the bird flew, uphill and out of sight. Wing pattern was not seen well, but wings were long and pointed, and flight was direct and strong. Seen at 1528 by small pond along Bayview Dr. After I wrote these details down I relocated and photographed the bird.
