Details: **Always rare from shore and remarkable to see so many! No doubt the product of several days of strong easterly winds. First saw three birds together feeding offshore, then gradually realized there were more birds, mixed with many FOTE and a few COTE. In a short period of time, saw 12 ARTE in a loosely associated group, all working east while feeding. Later, two more singles feeding and drifting eastbound. Similar general pattern to COTE: gray overall with contrasting white rump and tail. More petite and buoyant than COTE, with shorter head/neck, longer tail, wider-based wings with more triangular look. Flight feathers pale recalling frosty look of FOTE, and even toned, lacking molt limit shown by COTE; thin white trailing edge to secondaries unlike dark secondaries of COTE. Underwings with very thin dark trailing edge to primaries, and whitish translucence to all primaries and secondaries. Much dip feeding, when birds flared out their wings, highlighting translucence and more triangular wing shape. Photos of last bird, which was closer to shore. All adults.
