Observations

  1. Number observed: 2

Details: Pair. Stefan first spotted a group of ten-ish dabbling ducks a few hundred yards to the southwest of the pier. I scoped them to see if the long-taileds were tucked in among them, and saw two peel away from the others (the main group turned out to be mallards).

I (and eventually all of us) saw the honking large/long bills. I was also able to see the chestnut flanks on the male. And, when a boat flushed them to a different part of the lake (almost due west of the pier), I was able to track the male by the baby blue forewings. We all saw them well after they put down in the new area.

  6. Number observed: 1

Details: (Possibly two more). This bird was spotted due south of the pier, but at quite a distance. Thin neck, jagged head feathers in profile, squat and wide body.

We saw this bird again, flying towards the north part of the lake, when the eagle was harrying all the ducks. The feet were dangling behind it, and the neck had the characteristic bowed shape.
