Details: Unlike my lifer in Nicaragua, this specimen was a dark morph not showing any hints of the brick red coloring. This made the 2 tone of the bottom side of the wings much more defined. Also saw the white tail bars and the medium size raptor confirmed this species.

  13. Number observed: 1

Details: It was a pleasant surprise to see a large, dark raptor flying around. I knew it was something special when I got my 8x42 binoculars on it. This a a solo individual and being over water I had ample opportunity to observe it while it flew by. 1st thing noticed grabbing my attention was the tail where white stripes were obvious. Next thing noticed was the broader wings than the Turkey Vulture’s. In addition I clearly saw the barred light white pattern of the flight feathers where the vultures show a more solid color pattern. Last but not least was the fact that the head enjoyed feathering thereby eliminating the Turkey Vulture and confirming the ZONE-TAILED HAWK for the next addition to my life list.
