Partly sunny, windy from the south, mid 30's. I checked the beach, Dunes, Magic Hedge, peripheral plantings, and harbor, and scanned Lake Michigan from the fishing pier. Spectacular movement of Greater White-fronted Geese. Smaller movement of Canada Geese and blackbirds.

Observations

  1. Snow/Ross's Goose

    Number observed: 2

Details: Pair mixed in with a flock of Greater White-fronted Geese flying high over the Point. Medium-sized white geese with black primaries, about the same size as the White-fronteds. The birds are near the apex of the "V" in the photos.

  2. Number observed: 1200

Details: Spectacular movement. Multiple flocks of 50-200 birds flying north or northwest over Lake Michigan at 500-1500 ft, turning left over the Point and flying west or northwest over Chicago. Small brown geese with short necks, more pointed wings than Canada, paler, browner necks, black barring and spotting on the underparts on many, no white throat patch, more white in the tail, white frontal blaze on a few, wavy, undulating flight. The flight lasted from about 6:45 to 7:30. Probably many more but I left some distant flocks of geese unidentified due to distance.
