With Tim Turpin- this was the owling part of the Columbia CBC. I played owl and rail (along areas bordering the City of Columbia Wetland Cell #2), calls for response, especially in hollows along the west facing bluffs above the Missouri River and adjacent woodlands.

Observations

  1. Number observed: 26

    Details: Flyovers

  2. Number observed: 1

Details: Response to playback of calls in Wetland Cell #2

  3. Number observed: 4

Details: Low- in some years I have had as many as 24-26 birds making the same stops and attempting to elicit response from playback of calls. This stretch of the Katy Trail typically and on average has one of the largest concentrations of ESOW anywhere in MO. Given the max. number in this stretch is 20-25 birds, the filter is set entirely too low for this location but would be appropriate for other localities in this county. This is based on using ESOW tape recordings to elicit a response along this 6 mi. stretch over a 25+ year span.

  4. Number observed: 1

Details: Called while on roost in response to playback of E. Screech Owl tape
