Details: ***mega; continuing extreme rarity for October and inland counties in Massachusetts (one prior inland record from Holden, Worcester Co., 25-27 Jul 1990) occurring concurrently with one in Monroe Co., NY. Present on far side of pond when I arrived but flew closer to NW side and then approached closer and landed right in front of where I had been scoping allowing point blank views for 40+ minutes. Obvious White-faced with bright pinkish-red facial skin (no paler margins), deep red eyes and dark pupil, pale horn colored bill down to edge of facial skin. Clearly an ASY bird; not sure if we can get more specific here. The body plumage looks adult-like but the back and scapulars have scattered iridescent olive-green feathers scattered among the reddish-purple adult feathers, the lower scaps were greenish with the longest greater secondary coverts and tertials with distinct bronzy hue (unlike Glossy). Neck and head grayish-brown with short white streaks throughout. All median and lesser coverts distinctly iridescent oily greenish-purple. Leg coverts appeared brownish. Legs dusky gray with faint pinkish cast. Many photos.
