Details: Distant sterna tern foraging over the water with much diving action; seen and observed with 20 to 60X scope and studied at length. I vacillated between COTE and FOTE for some time trying to determine the species. For either species the date is somewhat late, favoring perhaps FOTE. Subsequent observations of this bird by others that were able to obtain closer views and excellent photos determine the correct call was Common Tern. The black nape was a confirming factor along with a black carpal bar evident in the photos taken by Bob Martinka. I appreciate the help extended by others to try to nail down the correct ID of this confusing sterna complex.
