Sevenmile Creek bird monitoring survey. 50 F to 64 F. Survey began moist and calm with overcast stratus clouds and very light drizzle; it had been sunny the day before but rained in the early (dark) hours of the morning. By 0806 the rain had completely stopped and cloud cover had decreased to 99%. By 1016 clouds had decreased to 70%. Cloud cover was variable through the rest of the survey, with intermittent sun; at one point clouds decreased to 30% but were at 75% at the survey end. Around 1028, an intermittent light breeze began from the east. It became a gentle breeze around 1130, then shifted to a gentle SW breeze by 1145. Around 1250 the breeze was gentle from the west, gusting fresh. The gusty west winds continued for the rest of the survey, with moderate W breeze at the end. There was a brief, light shower between 1325 and ca 1340. Bird notes: Perhaps the most incredible day of raptor migration I have yet seen on a survey here. Lots of RTHA and TUVU moving, either using thermals or rapidly gliding over. Substantial numbers of Accipiters (including a possible NOGO?) and AMKE as well. Other surprises included continuing EAPH, HAWO, and the second sighting of a LOSH on the site! Fairly late sightings of SAVS, VESP, WAVI, and GRCA. Substantial numbers of WIWA and record numbers of CEDW and RCKI seen along the creek. Other warblers, except YRWA, were very sparse. Relatively few AMRO seen, presumably related to the small Chokecherry crop this year.

Details: First observation at 0931. 1 counted on property. Continuing, but still not chaseable as site is not open to public access. 22. Number observed: 1

Details: First observation at 1507. 1 counted on property. Studied carefully in the field and later from photos. Identified by combination of relatively small hook on bill, black mask clearly extending above the eye, and lack of barring on the breast. Expected species for this time of year, but on the late end of the season and also quite rare on this site. First seen perched on a metal fencepost about 10 m SW of the start point. At 1511, it flew down ca 20 m NW to the gravel road and then flew up to another metal fencepost about 50-75 m south with a grasshopper, which it proceeded to eat. A WEME was on one of the other fenceposts immediately SW of the shrike but took off ca 30 seconds after the shrike landed. At 1519 I saw it capture a second grasshopper, dropping down immediately below where it was perched on the fence. At 1541 it was still in the same area and caught at least 2 more grasshoppers. With one of the captures, I definitely observed it using a barb on the fence to hold the grasshopper while manipulating it with its beak. It was still within 100 m of the start point at the end of the survey, and I observed it capture at least 1 more grasshopper and impale it on a barb before eating it. Detections (number 15-minute intervals in which the species was detected): 5 on property.
