  20. shorebird sp.

    Number observed: 1

Details: Shorebird poking along the spit at Bridgerman Point among 100s of terms and gulls, no other shorebirds present. Even at great distance, orange legs distinctive, dumpy shape ruled out yellowlegs, white rump bar in flight ruled out Pectoral Sandpiper, and finer longer beak ruled out Turnstone. Buff tinge to body noted along with orange legs. Watched thru Swarovski scope 90mm for ca 1.5 min till it flew up, showed white bar across rump and unbarred tail and typical ruff proportions before flying out of sight toward southwest. Added on 22 Aug: Reconsidered certainty of Ruff sighting due to long distance and heat shimmer through scope: moderate-sized, like Tringa sandpiper, dumpy in shape, jerky movements while moving around roosting terns, but not extensive back-and-forth head-movement; no crouching-stealth movements hunting flies or fast runs or exaggerated head-movements during jerky walking as would be typical of Wilson's Phalarope foraging on land. While I believe the bird was a Ruff, I can't rule out the possibility that the distance and heat shimmer occasioned sufficient distortion of bill appearance and in-flight rump coloration as well as body proportions of a fat Wilson's Phalarope.
