Details: This is an unusual "after the fact" ID based on Rob Curtis' video of the bird in question. I was birding along the east side of the sanctuary by the native plantings and came upon a large Accipiter perched very close to me fairly low in the gnarly crab apple tree at the edge of the wooded area. At the same time I noticed Rob photographing the hawk from the other side of the native planting area. I froze but the bird spotted me and flew off to the north. He posted this video several weeks later in a Cooper's Hawk montage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFLKiczA6gA&feature=youtu.be). Bird in question is seen in segments at 0:28-1:06 and 1:07-1:20. Subsequently, several folks noted that the bird was a juvenile Northern Goshawk. From the video, the diagnostic features distinguishing the bird from a Cooper's are the distinctly uneven bars on the tail and the dark spotting on the undertail coverts that can be seen in the first segment and particularly as the bird takes off in the second segment. Additional features are the fairly prominent expanding whitish supercilium, tawny hind neck and brownish ear-patch. I assume the bird was a male as it wasn't strikingly bigger than a Cooper's Hawk and male Goshawks overlap in size with female Coopers. (Documentation submitted to IORC.)
