Details: Sharp-shinned Hawk, immature seen Ecclesdown Road in the Blue and John Crowe Mountain Reserve on the afternoon of the 20th March. This was not a species that we expected to see as it is a very scarce and elusive species. While watching a Chestnut-bellied Cuckoo we noticed a small hawk sitting on a branch just beyond it. It had a long, barred tail and heavily streaked below and in many ways it reminded me of an immature male Eurasian Sparrowhawk. It looked towards us and almost immediately took flight. The rounded wings, small head and fairly delicate bill added to that perception. These characteristics, habitat choice and behaviour rule out Merlin and American Kestrel. Both of which we saw regularly in Domincan Republic where we had been prior to Jamaica as well as elsewhere in Jamaica.
It was just too quick for me to get an image.
I am familiar with the species in North America and have seen many on migration at Cape May over the years.
