Observations

  1. Number observed: 1

Details: Foraging on the ground under tree cover near the water's edge.

  2. Number observed: 2
  3. Number observed: 1

Details: Observed foraging at the water's edge, in ephemeral vegetation. Spotted and IDed by the tour guide and he was excited because it was a rare sighting. Unfortunately I was not able to get a photo. Bird had a bright orange beak and iridescent purple & greenish plumage.

Breeding Code: H In Appropriate Habitat (Possible)
    Age & Sex:
    Juvenile Immature Adult Age Unknown
    Male
    Female
    Sex Unknown 1
    Oiled Birds:
    1 Not oiled
    Oiled, not obviously sick
    Oiled, obviously sick
    Could not determine if oiled
  4. Number observed: 12

Details: 1 female with at least 3 fledged young observed near the river's edge (young were somewhat obscured by vegetation), near her nest where another adult (her mate/male?) was perched with a snail in its mouth. Other adults observed perching near the water's edge in groups of 1-3, some were calling. A group of 3 seemed to be flying at each other/chasing each other away from a particular location.

Breeding Code: FL Recently Fledged Young (Confirmed)
    Age & Sex:
    Juvenile Immature Adult Age Unknown
    Male
    Female 1
    Sex Unknown 3 8

  5. Number observed: 1
  6. Number observed: 10

Details: Most were observed flying past us above the river or along the tree line near the river, and a couple were observed perching on low branches near the water's edge. Two were IDed as female by the tour guide, one I IDed as male (perched very close to the boat), the rest were too far away or flying to fast to see clearly enough to sex. Conservative estimate to account for potential repeat sightings, as many were flying around a lot up and down the river.

    Age & Sex:
    Juvenile Immature Adult Age Unknown
    Male 1
    Female 2
    Sex Unknown 7
  7. Number observed: 6

Details: Observed perching on branches jutting out of the water (one of which was also occupied by basking turtles) or swimming/fishing in a shallow area where there was a group of manatees.

  8. Number observed: 1

Details: Foraging in ephemeral/aquatic vegetation at the river's edge.

  9. Number observed: 3

Details: 1 heron had started a nest high up in a tree near the river. Others were observed standing/foraging near the water's edge.

  12. Number observed: 10

Details: Estimated count. We saw these frequently in the marshy areas along the water's edge. All appeared to be adults.

    Juvenile Immature Adult Age Unknown
    Male
    Female
    Sex Unknown 10
    Media:
  13. Number observed: 20

Details: There were many white ibises foraging and flying near the water's edge, or among the trees just off the river. Estimated count is conservative due to the potential for repeat sightings, since many birds were flying about along the river.

    Media:
  14. Number observed: 8

Details: Roosting in low branches by the river's edge in a group of black & turkey vultures, some were sitting with wings outstretched. Other vultures were observed soaring but could not be IDed to species.

  15. Number observed: 5

  16. Number observed: 1

Details: Perching at the top of a tall tree on the opposite side of the river from the tour boat's dock. Flew away as we pulled out of the dock.
