International Moth Week event, with owling included! Mark, Rob, Erin, Donna, Doug, Tom, JJ, Carol, Chris, Debbi and me. Little-to-no wind, no fog until the last hour, moderate temperatures (low 60s) throughout. We set up our moth lamps on Old Woman Creek Road, but the birds were calling from all directions. While we were essentially stationary, individuals, and later most of the group, moved around sufficiently (and detected birds with that movement) to justify making this a traveling count.

Observations

  1. Number observed: 2

Details: Heard in flight at around 10:00 pm - quite a surprise to me, but Mark remembered this from when he lived in Pescadero. This is a conservative estimate - there could have been as many as five

  2. Number observed: 1
  3. Number observed: 1

    Details: Heard screeching

  4. Number observed: 1

Details: Heard giving the little nippy barks

  5. Number observed: 3

Details: Avidly calling in the twilight

  6. Number observed: 2

Details: heard distantly to the west at a wide time interval; could have been a single individual, but the sense of direction caused me to put down two

  7. Number observed: 2

Details: For these, we went on an excursion up Gazos Creek Road to Jennifer's favorite spot. The birds were quite close to us, but we could not find them with our lights.
