Kyle Lima, Don Lima, and I birded a bit by car and walking along Veazie St and into park area (snow covered); we also scanned for ducks at the corner of Rock and Lemon Streets, Veazie, where we found a flock of Barrow's Goldeneyes. Sunny with clouds, becoming mostly cloudy and chilly (22° F) with biting W to WNW wind.

  3. Common x Barrow's Goldeneye (hybrid)

    Number observed: 1

Details: A male that showed a head shape intermediate toward Common and a strongly iridescent green head color like Common Goldeneye, especially by comparison with the male Barrow's present. The dark spur at the breast sides was hardly noticeable and much shorter and truncated than a Barrow's. There seemed to be more white in the wing (mostly white on wing coverts visible below scapulars) in direct comparison to pure Barrow's. The white marking on the face was broader and oval ventrally compared to the male Barrow's here. The white bars on the scapulars were broader and less markedly divided by black lines than typical of pure Barrow's.
