Received an eBird alert at 4:04 pm that Holly Merker had spotted Black Terns at Marsh Creek. Went over to meet her and Mike Defina to see the terns, but ended up also encountering a juvenile Red Phalarope in transitional plumage after a heavy rainstorm.

Holly's checklist can be viewed at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31190876.

Observations

  1. Number observed: 7
  2. Number observed: 1

Details: After garnering identification assistance from Marshall Iliff, Brian Sullivan, M. O'Brien, and multiple others through Holly Merker, it was decided that this was a Red Phalarope and not a Red-necked Phalarope. Contrasting the RNPH, deciding factors include a thicker base of the bill, a stockier neck and chest, lighter gray head and facial markings, and a pinkish buffy blush around the throat. This is an uncommon plumage to observe, especially inland.
