Shearwater Journeys Pelagic Trip. With Princeton team (Steve Howell, Brian Sullivan, Michael O'Brien, and Ian Lewington) as part of our initial meeting. Seas had no swells and winds were very light from the southeast. Skipper was Nick Lemon; on the Star of Monterey. Entering from notes (BLS likely has better). Rough estimate of distance. We spent a lot of time in the same area watching storm-petrels.

Details: **Rare. My first. Associating with large numbers of Black and Ashy Storm-Petrels. There were a total of 6 seen today, but I only had good views of two individuals. First found by Steve Howell, but fairly easy to find by small size, erratic (not fluttery) flight style and distinctive tail shape. From Ashy Storm-Petrels by quicker and jerky flight; not as fluttery. I was only able to get distant poor photos. Overall appearance recalling Black Storm-Petrel more than Ashy with hint of dark hood, but much smaller and with tapered tail; feet not projecting beyond tail.
