This was a big day at the end of my 2015 field season. Many birds were staked out using prior knowledge from 8 months of field work at Los Amigos. I walked a total of 18.15 km in 19 hours, so I averaged walking a little less than 1 km per hour. The skies were clear throughout the day; min/max temp 18/25ºC. This day was opportunistically selected since it was relatively cool from a friaje (winter storm) on the previous day. These cooler days make fantastic birding days for a number of reasons, including: 1) the birds are active throughout the day since there is no intense heat of the day, 2) relatively little insect noise throughout the day due to cooler temps, allowing for far better listening for bird song, and 3) clear skies allow for not only a decent raptor flight, but also slightly prolonged daylight around dusk and dawn. In addition, the moon was waxing half-full, so nocturnal birds were also relatively active. Habitats visited included: upper terrace forest, lower terrace forest, ridgeline forest, bamboo, semi-wet oxbow lake, oxbow lake, marsh, river/river-edge forest, palm swamp, and high overlooks for scanning canopy and open sky. Incidentally, I had two kinkajous, an olingo, a non-Giant armadillo sp., and a brocket deer sp. throughout the big day.

The general strategy was to visit various habitats, all of which were close and easily accessible from the station, and pick up various staked out birds along the way. I started the day on the upper terrace listening for targets in forest and bamboo, then the rest of the morning was spent on the lower terrace mostly around forest, lake and riverine habitat. In my experience, the activity of birds on the lower terrace is more dependent on the time of day than is activity on the upper terrace, so it made sense to knock out the lower terrace early on. In addition, I did not spend time picking through canopy flocks in the morning since these are still active in the afternoon. The afternoon was spent on the upper terrace targeting misses from the morning, upper terrace birds, canopy flocking species, and marsh birds at Cocha Raya.
