Observations

  1. Number observed: 1

Details: responded several times to a recording of Virginia Rail sounds I played.

Breeding Code: S Singing Male (Possible)
  2. Number observed: 1

Details: this individual was heard initially by Rob Wright as he canoed through the wetland on June 22. He described the call and made an imitation and I made a couple of guesses but forgot about it. I had been hearing a sound myself from our yardsite four hundred metres away but thought it was something my machine-loving neighbour was doing. Then on June 24th Brian Sterenberg and I walked down to the marsh to do some general atlassing. We immediately heard the notes of the bittern but had no idea what it was at the time. That was about 5 pm. I returned later with my iPad to play the songs of Virginia Rail thinking it might have been a strange rail. A virginia rail responded immediately but from a different area of the marsh while the as yet unidentified bittern continued its strange call. So I made a couple of short videos and posted them on youtube to send it around to others for help. Jared Clarke figured it out. On the evening of June 25 at 7:40 PM I returned to the site to see if the bittern was still there. It had moved fifty metres away across the pond but when I played the Merlin recording of its song it simply continued its own call and did not come into view. I will continue to monitor the marsh and see how long it continues to vocalize. A link to the youtube video was sent by Jared Clarke to LeeAnn and she confirmed the ID.
