Large and powerful swift with a squared off tail, pale throat, and pale vent and under-tail. Mostly dark above, although its back has a slightly paler patch. Always seen in flight, when it glides on long fixed wings giving the appearance of a flying crescent; glides interspersed with short periods of fast stiff wing-beats. Breeds in east and southeast Asia, and migrates south to spend the nonbreeding season in Australia.
