Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A large cuckoo of lowland and hill forest. All black apart from white crown stripe and some pale edged undertail feathers. Vocal but difficult to see. The usual call, a series of 4 clear, rapid notes “wiwiwiwip”. The white crown strip separates it from any other medium-sized black birds. If the white crown is not seen, can look similar to male Pacific Koel, but note White-crowned’s black rather than pale bill.
