A small whistling-duck with strongly pale-spotted neck and flanks. This species has a dark beak and a gray face. Similar to Wandering Whistling-Duck, but lacking the warm rusty coloring, and has pale-spotted breast rather than a dark-spotted one. Found in small flocks in coastal wetlands and lagoons. In Australia its range is slowly expanding southwards from Cape York with regular records from the Wet Tropics Region.
