Declining endemic of the East Asian flyway, this mid-sized and stocky wader forages almost exclusively on coastal mudflats and very rarely ventures inland. Gray overall, but adult in breeding plumage has a brick-orange patch on the upper wing and a black back and chest. Nonbreeding plumage much duller, with dark brown-gray back, wings, and head complemented by a white belly. Structurally similar to Red Knot, but Red Knot is much paler in nonbreeding plumage, appears stumpier, and has a shorter bill.
