Large cormorant found nearly worldwide. Note large size, white patch on throat, and lack of crest. Breeding adults show circular white patch on flanks. Immatures typically have contrasting white belly. Often spotted standing on rocks or pilings. Dives frequently, feeding on fish. Distinguished from Double-crested Cormorant by larger size and white patch on throat (and white belly in juvenile Great), and from European Shag by larger size and lack of crest in adult. Found in many types of water bodies but in the Americas restricted to coastal North Atlantic; rarely seen inland.
