Sleek silvery seabird with distinctive "M" pattern on upperwings visible in flight. Bright white underwings and belly. Colder bluish-gray with less of a brown tone than most other shearwaters. Usually easily separated from other shearwaters by wing pattern. Dark cap like Great Shearwater, but ranges do not typically overlap. Breeds on islands off New Zealand. Rarely seen from land, prefers to stay offshore. Found singly or in flocks with other shearwaters.
