Wind 8ESE, 83F, mostly overcast by the end but some blue sky early. Seemed dead when I arrived but as usual the longer you watch the ocean the more you see! Walked out to beach from Visitor Center, spent almost all my time in one spot scanning water with scope amd binocs, then hoofed it down the beach and around to East Dike and to parking lot for my exercise!

Details: smaller tern with black bill and slightly forked shorter tail, various amounts of
black on head and underbody (must be in process of molting to winter plumage), definite dark ear patch, full cap and black on underbelly. Light underwing and undertail, light gray upper wings. Flew in from N and wondered if it had been sitting with the large group of larger terns I could barely see at Little Island end of forbidden zone. The bird associated briefly with other smaller terns feeding just offshore in front of me, and then flew solo directly south down the beach and out of sight.
