Dark brown seabird, smaller than most gulls. Very similar to Sooty Shearwater but slightly smaller with shorter bill and steeper forehead. Wingbeats are quick and snappy but deep. Variable underwing pattern, usually with less distinct silver flash than Sooty Shearwater, but is difficult to judge depending on lighting. Can be abundant in ocean waters off Alaska, gathering in large flocks; less common further south.
