Both observers saw it with one pic taken but it's too poor to use. This species has been seen by both observers extensively, both in the Gulf of Maine and further south, included off Long Island the other day (also considered rare there but our description with photo was accepted). Loch has also seen NOFU literally hundreds of times in the Labrador Sea & elsewhere around northern Newfoundland and also on the Scotian Shelf and George's Bank. The NOFU seen was the light form with gray back and light gray tail. What distinguishes this species fastest to me is the windmill flying motion it appears to have and that it likes to bank and be vertical a lot as well as flying horizontal. It tends to go straight forward unlike shearwaters that explore more and poke about among the waves. It appears chunky to me with seemingly short, rounded wings; I say "seemingly short" because their wings are seemingly very long when they bank and fly vertically.

Both observers saw this bird close to ship. It was a typical Great Shearwater: looking like a moving arc over the waves, exploring between waves and not usually flying directly but exploring. It had a neat black cap with a dark brown collar. Its wings were long and narrow with little bending - like a moving arc. Both observers have had considerable experience with this species in the Gulf of Maine (where we saw ~100 of this species on this cruise) and Loch has seen this common species along the Scotian Shelf as well as on the Grand Banks and in the Labrador Sea.

Both observers saw it. There also were pics - see below for heavily cropped versions. Note especially in the pics the striking whites wing patches, white undersides, bunting-liketail with some black in centre on underside. It flew like a snow bunting with the sudden dips in flight and its profile was very bunting-like.

1 mature; seen by both observers on port side. No pics were taken. Both observers have seen BLKI (altogether 45) on this 2 week long pelagic trip from Newport to George's Bank and along the New England coast. Furthermore, we have seen Kittiwakes on other pelagics both in Gulf of Maine and along the Canadian East Coast and north of Newfoundland.
