Checklist Comments

Mostly cloudy to start, becoming overcast; partly cloudy to sunny by early afternoon, and then clouding up late with a few breaks; 36-46 F; calm to start becoming windy from S-SW by mid morning, wind 10-15 mph. We birded from the Ice Pond south through town, checking beaches and Wharton Ave before heading south toward Lobster Cove by way of Mooring Chain Rd. and Ocean Ave. From Lobster Cove, we headed up trail #1 around the southeast side of the island, birding parts of Underhill Trail, Burnt Head Trail, Horn Hill, and back through town. We also walked out the Library Road to the pump station and the back of the meadow, up through the cemetery, around the lighthouse and ballfield, down the Lighthouse Road and back along Black Head Rd to Ice Pond Rd. Distance calculated (partially estimated) using one-way paths of our routes, i.e. not counting backtracking over same sections. Total walking distance was close to 6+ miles or almost 10 kilometers.

Presumably the same bird as yesterday was now further south in town. Tail wagged downward, pale underparts, grayish olive upperparts with whitish edging to wing coverts. Photos.

  26. Number observed:  2

    Details

A duller bird and a brighter bird along trail #1. Both showed gray heads with fairly sharp demarcation to white throat, bold white spectacles, blackish lores, greenish backs, bold white wing bars, yellow flanks and white underparts. The head-back contrast on the first bird was duller and washed with greenish (immature female?), whereas the second was more boldly marked on the head with somewhat sharper contrasts (immature male?).

We saw this bird in the same area that we heard it yesterday. A long-tailed, medium dark gray mimid with chestnut undertail coverts and black cap. In thicket of barberry and bittersweet on south facing slope below top of Horn Hill Road and above Underhill trail.

Heard by the others and thought to have the coarser rattling seee notes typical of this species. This bird flew overhead at the ballfield and appeared to be larger than Cedar and overall darker (grayer?). Body size seemed to sync with call as Bohemian, but I (LRB) could not hear the vocalization.

Doug spotted this bird at the sw. corner of the meadow. Moving closer, I thought that I heard a few call notes from the grass here that sounded like Lincoln's, giving a somewhat Black-throated Blue like 'tchik' or 'tik' call note (responded to playback).

    Notes from DPH:
Unfortunately brief view of bird on the edge of asters. Dapper looking Melospiza with very fine streaking on chest; cleaner than on SOSP. Overall impression was a predominantly brown-gray color (on chest, back, and malar) rather than reddish-brown on SWSP. Dark petite bill. Poor view in flight but appeared shorter tailed than SOSP.

Spotted by Doug on lawn immediately north of Rusty's landing, this bird was seen at very close range as it foraged. A yellow-buff bird with dark streaking; upperparts with pale cream-colored braces on the back; short and spiky tail; heavy pinkish bill; blackish lateral crown stripes. Any November Bobolink in Maine is late and rare, but this is not the latest date for the species in the state.

Pale-bellied bird in plums again. This is the bird with olive washed orange hood, orange throat and breast, grayish white lower breast and abdomen, and orange undertail coverts. The upper wing bars are bold and broad without black "teeth"; lower wing bars narrow and lacking pale outer margins.

One was an unusual pale brown bird at Lobster Cove. It looked chunky and short-tailed in some aspects. The other bird was simply an unidentified sparrow seen on trail 1 below Burnt Head (White-throat or Song most likely).
